Steam on (K)ubuntu 15.10

March 6, 2016

On an Intel G2358, MSI H81i, 8gb and no extra discrete graphics…..

  1. Download debian_latest.deb
  2. install with dpkg
  3. asks for some lib32 and other dependencies. On startup, throws an error about not loaded steamui.so.

Community posts give some hints – https://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/882966056522497778/#p7

and its resolved in this case by

cd ln -sf ubuntu12_32 ubuntu15_32
ln -sf ubuntu12_32 ubuntu15_32
steam

Not it starts and I can login at least.

Now to see if Intel HD graphics get anywhere or if we’re into Nvidia territory ! (some possibilities here – http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTU0NDU)

Update : it runs etc, and testing the demo of Football Manager 2016 by my lab rat shows its OK for the static stuff, buts giving about 4/5 fps on the playbacks. To be expected I suppose, but better than the other rig with a Core Duo 8600 and an old GeForce 8500
